I want to be a part of this project because it is a great opportunity to learn about how others served our country. Even if a veteran was not drafted, they still served our country, and I believe that it is equally as important to recognize those who saw combat and those who did not. That is why I chose my grandpa for this project. I think that this is a great chance to recognize him because I don't think that he gets recognized enough for everything he did. I also want to learn about other branches of the military and other ways that veterans served in the military. I want to hear the stories that they have to tell and the experiences they had, that I could not imagine. I know that I couldn't make it through training and bootcamp, and the fact that these veterans not only made it through bootcamp, but some also saw war, death, and real combat amazes me. A trip to D.C to top it all off is a great way to end this project, seeing the Iwo Jima memorial after learning about it in class and seeing the Lincoln Monument and the changing of soldiers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier will be a once in a lifetime experience that I will remember forever, being able to witness this with my grandpa will make it even more memorable, knowing that he went through bootcamp and was ready to serve our country in combat for the things that we see in D.C and in our community today. It is going to be awesome to recognize these veterans for everything that they have done to make our country the country it is today. And I couldn't be more proud to be doing this project in recognition of them, and in remembrance of those who served our country. --Emi I could learn a lot from listening to the veterans and really understand what it was like to live in/during that time. I feel like my partner is going to be pretty interesting since he is not just a veteran, but he is also the owner of Scooters. I want to be a part of this project so I can go to Washington D.C. DC would be a fun experience for me. The cool thing about bringing veterans with us is that they can make connections from DC to their war memories. It would also be cool to hear stories that they have. I haven't been to a lot of museums and in these next couple of weeks I'll get to see a lot of real things. --Breckin I like hearing stories from old people like they always have something to say and it's just going to be a cool experience. I feel like hearing stories and seeing the stuff the veterans bring in will be cool too. They are going to tell us about what it is and what they used some of it for, but it has a lot more detail then what they can say and tell us emotionally. I really want to see what some veterans are going to say and how the other veterans respond to it differently. I want to be part of the project because veterans have been through so much and they lived through a tough fight in their life so I can be there and make someone happy and help them. Also, I want to fly on an airplane, I want to go to D.C. I think seeing the memorials will be cool and it will be a good experience. I really think visitings cool structures and stuff from the war will be cool. I'm super excited. --Daniel The reason I want to be a part of Heroes and Huskies is because I think that this would be a great opportunity for me to get to know veterans in and outside of our community. I hope that I can really learn a lot more about history and the different forces that the veterans were all in.
I am also looking forward to seeing how all of the videos that we make turn out.I am excited to go to Washington DC and visit the different memorials in DC and learn about them. I have never been to DC so I am looking forward to a quick trip to get a little glimpse of it. I am really interested in hearing all of the veterans' war stories and getting to know them. --Sarah

12th Street Cinema will be showing "Top Gun Maverick" September 30-October 2.All of us involved in the Heroes & Huskies Project are deeply saddened by the loss of Rex Nissen, one of our Heroes from I Corps. It was fun getting to know Rex and his military experience, especially the day he went through his picture album and told us stories from his time in the Air Force. After the trip to DC he bought us all SAC pins which showed us how proud he was of his service. I wear my pin on my favorite hat and think about him every time I put my hat on.
--Brenda Klawonn We are hosting an open house for the newly renovated "Woodring" home in Aurora. Check the flier for more information. We hope to see you there!
A huge thank you to Doug Kittle for nominating the Heroes & Huskies Project to Nebraska Loves Public Schools. Another big thank you to Nebraska Loves Public Schools for filming a commercial about us.
With the first group of our Heroes we split them up with their Huskie and sent them off to other rooms where they went through the interview process. We only got to hear individual stories. We changed things up with the second group and improved the process with our third and current group, we put into our schedule a panel discussion day.
On panel discussion day, we put all the veterans in front of the room with Tim Elge acting as a moderator. This time we gave the students a topic and had them write a question for the veterans about the topic. Then after introductions, the students took turns asking questions of the panel. This group of Heroes is very interesting and have great stories about their military experiences and I learned that 90 minutes is NOT enough time for this session. |
