By Brenda Klawonn (co-leader) Today our 10 Military Veteran volunteers came to our classroom for our first meeting. Once everyone was seated in the classroom Mr. Elge (co-leader) presented the purpose of the project, a timeline of events and the itinerary for the trip to Washington, D.C. We then had a break to get coffee and snacks before moving on to introductions. Mr. Elge led the introductions by calling on a student, who then stood up and gave a brief introduction of themselves and then called on their Veteran partner to then do the same. After all the introductions had been completed, each partnership got together and the students had some pre-service questions to ask their Veteran. 15 short minutes later the bell rang and there was a reluctance by everyone to stop the conversations. This first meeting was a huge success. Hours later, I'm still walking around with a grin on my face because I keep thinking about how fun and exciting this first meeting was.
Please check back to this blog page because the students and Mr. Elge will also be posting their own field notes. Our next meeting is September 6 and more information will be added to the website.
